How is parturition in humans calculated?

Open in App
Solution

Parturition:

  1. Parturition is the process of childbirth and initiates labor to deliver the baby at the end of the pregnancy period.
  2. Parturition occurs approximately 38 weeks post-fertilization and lasts for 8-12 hours in human females.
  3. It is calculated as the 280th day after the onset of the last menstrual period of women.
  4. Hormones such as estrogen, oxytocin, relaxin, and prostaglandin play key roles in the induction of labor.
  5. Estrogen and oxytocin induce uterine contractions and oxytocin helps the production and release of milk for breastfeeding.
  6. Relaxin helps relax the pelvic muscles and widens the cervix whereas prostaglandin facilitates the ripening of the cervix.
  7. During labor, the uterus is contracted and relaxed alternatively to push the fetus until it descends into the birth canal.
