In deserts plants, stomata open during night (as respiration occurs during night) and takes carbon dioxide which gets stored in vacuoles. This stored CO2 is utilised during day time, in the presence of sunlight to carry out photosynthesis. However, in case of other terrestrial plants, respiration occurs throughout the day and night. In desert plants, stems carry out photosynthesis whereas in other terrestrial plants, photosynthesis occurs majorly in the leaves.
