The relative density of a substance is the ratio between the density of the substance and the density of the water at $4^{0} C$ .
Mathematically it is given as, $R e l a t i v e d e n s i t y = \frac{D e n s i t y o f t h e s u b s \tan c e}{D e n s i t y o f w a t e r}$ .
According to Archimedes' principle relative density is the ratio of the weight of a substance to the apparent loss of weight of substance when immersed in water.
Hence, $R e l a t i v e d e n s i t y = \frac{W e i g h t o f b o d y i n a i r}{(W e i g h t o f b o d y i n a i r - W e i g h t o f b o d y i n w a t e r)}$ .
