Question

How to calculate the oxidation state of Fe in brown ring complex? On calculation I am getting +2, so can I get a proper explanation on how to calculate that?

Solution

[Fe.NO.5H2O]SO4.
H2O is a Neutral ligand so it's charge will be counted as zero. Now NO is a monodentate +ve ligand which has +1 charge on it.
Since the valency of SO4 is -2 ,so the coordination entity should posses +2 charge.+1 charge is given by NO and the rest +1 should be given by Fe in order to form the complex .
hence the charge of Fe would be +1 .
