- As of 2017, India comes in the category of low middle income countries, as the per capita income of India was $1820 per annum.
- As of 2017, Low Income countries are those countries with per capita income of US$ 955 or less.
- As of 2017, Rich countries are those countries with per capita income of US$ 12,056 per annum and above.
- Rich countries are usually called Developed countries, excluding few small nations and nations located in the Middle East.

- Human Development Index (HDI) Rank of India in 2018 was very low at 130.
- Among the neighbouring countries of India, Sri Lanka had a much better HDI rank of 76 for the same year.
