To construct an equation we need a variable(one or more according to the situation .) term "x"(commonly used variables are x,y,z etc.) .

Here is an example,
ax+b = c is the equation of a straight line.
here a,b ,c . x is the variable term . a is the coefficient of x.
The value of the equation is x=(c-b)÷a.
