Question

How to convert ethanol into methanol?

Open in App
Solution

Conversion of Ethanol to Methanol:-

Step 1: Formation of Ethanal

When the ethanol is oxidized with Potassium dichromateK2Cr2O7 and Sulphuric acid it produces Ethanal:

CH3-CH2-OHEthanolK2Cr2O7/H2SO4[O]CH3-CHOAceticacid

Step 2: Formation of Acetic acid

The Ethanal formed is again oxidized with Potassium dichromateK2Cr2O7 and Sulphuric acid to produce Acetic acid:

CH3-CHOEthanalK2Cr2O7/H2SO4[O]CH3-COOHAceticacid

Step 3: Formation of Sodium acetate

This Acetic acid is then reacted with Sodium hydroxide to form Sodium acetate

CH3-COOHAceticacid+NaOHSodiumhydroxideCH3COONaSodiumacetate+H2OWater

Step 4: Formation of Methane

The Sodium acetate formed is then reacted with Sodium hydroxide and Calcium oxide to form Methane(CH4), Sodium carbonate(Na2CO3) and Calcium

CH3COONaSodiumacetateSodalimeNaOH+CaOCH4Methane+Na2CO3Sodiumcarbonate+CaCalcium

Step 5: Formation of Methyl chloride

The Methane formed is now reacted with Chlorine to form Methyl chloride and Hydrochloric acid

CH4Methane+Cl2ChlorineCH3ClMethylchloride+HClHydrochloricacid

Step 6: Formation of Methanol

Finally, this Methyl chloride is reacted with Potassium hydroxide to produce our required Methanol:

CH3ClMethylchloride+KOHPotassiumhydroxideCH3OHMethanol+KClPotassiumchloride

This conversion of Ethanol to Methanol is a 6 step reaction.
