Question

How to convert ethanol to but-1-yne?

Open in App
Solution

Conversion of Ethanol to But-1-yne:-

Step 1: Formation of Ethyl chloride

When Ethanol is reacted with Thinyl chloride(SOCl2) and Pyridine it produces Ethyl chloride, Sulphur dioxide, and Hydrochloric acid:

Step 2: Formation of Sodium acetylide from Ethyne

When Ethyne is treated with Sodium amide(NaNH2) in the presence of liquid Ammonia(NH3) it produces Sodium acetylide:

Step 3: Formation of But-1-yne by adding Sodium acetylide and Ethyl chloride

Now when both Sodium acetylide and Ethyl chloride are added the resulting compound formed is But-1-yne and Sodium chloride:

This conversion of Ethanol to But-1-yne is a 3 step reaction
