Question

How to demagnetize a permanent magnet using current?

Open in App
Solution

Permanent magnets

  1. Permanent magnets are those magnets that are commonly used.
  2. They are known as permanent magnets because they do not lose their magnetic property once they are magnetized.

Demagnetize a Permanent Magnet

  1. A magnet can be demagnetized by placing it in a solenoid.
  2. The solenoid must be placed along the East-West direction of the earth's magnetic field.
  3. Pass an alternate current through the coil.
  4. This causes the current to continuously change its polarity.
  5. This causes the disruption of the alignment of the domains inside the magnet.
  6. Hence, the magnet weakens and eventually demagnetizes.
