Question

How to determine the charge on electron?

Open in App
Solution

Charge on Electron

  1. The charge on the electron was determined by Millikan by his oil drop experiment.
  2. Millikan used a very basic, very simple system in which the behaviour of gravitational, electrical and air drag forces was controlled.
  3. The charge of the electron is equivalent to the magnitude of the elementary charge (e-) but bearing a negative sign.
  4. The value of elementary charge is roughly 1.602×10-19C, then the charge of the electron is -1.602×10-19C.

Therefore, by the oil drop experiment we determine charge of electron.
