Question

how to distinguish between washing powder and baking soda by heating?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Baking powder on heating decomposes to give sodium carbonate, water, and carbon dioxide according to the following equation

2NaHCO3 → Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

Hence, an effervescence of Carbon Di-oxide is obtained.

While on heating washing soda (Na2CO3) there will be no reaction, that means it does not respond to heat.
