Baking powder on heating decomposes to give sodium carbonate, water, and carbon dioxide according to the following equation
2NaHCO₃ → Na₂CO₃ + H₂O + CO₂

Hence, an effervescence of Carbon Di-oxide is obtained.

While on heating washing soda (Na₂CO₃) there will be no reaction, that means it does not respond to heat.
