A thin layer of silver is applied to objects such as glass. To place Tollens' reagent in a glass, add Glucose/Dextrose, and shake the bottle to promote the reaction.
$A g N O_{3} + K O H \to A g O H + K N O 3$
$A g O H + 2 N H_{3} \to [A g (N H 3) 2] + + [O H] -$ (Note: see Tollens' reagent)
$[A g (N H_{3})_{2}] + + [O H] - +$ aldehyde (usually glucose/dextrose) $\to A g + 2 N H_{3} + H_{2} O$
