Open in App
Solution

question must be like this
How to find two positive rational numbers whose sum is 3/2 and if the greater is divided by the smaller the result is 2.? Two positive numbers, call them x and y (and let's say that y is greater than x)

Sum is 3/2
x + y = 3/2

Division is 2
y/x = 2
The second equation gives us
y = 2x

We go back to the first equation and substitute this value for y (we put 2x in the place of y)

x + y = 3/2
becomes
x + 2x = 3/2
3x = 3/2
x = 1/2

Then y = 2x = 2/2 = 1

Verification:

x + y = 1/2 + 2/2 = 3/2

y/x = 1/(1/2)
dividing by a fraction = multiply by the inverse (flip the fraction)
y/x = 1 * (2/1) = 2
