Question

How to find out the order and degree of a differential equation ?

Open in App
Solution

The order of a differential equation is the highest derivative in the equation and degree of DE is the degree of highest derivative.

For example:
5y′′6y3+8=0. Order of this DE is 2 since we have 2nd derivative of y and degree of DE is 1, since the degree of highest derivative is 1.

3(y′′′)2+2(y′′)4=0. Order of this DE is 3 and degree is 2.
dydx+sinx=0. Order of this DE is 1 and degree is 1.
