Question

How to find x where x is unknown, the molecular form is C2×X6 and mass ratio is 4:1.

Open in App
Solution

Given,
2 atoms of Carbon combine with 4 atoms of X.
Mass of 1 carbon atom = 12,
Or, Mass of carbon in compound = 12×2=24
We know that, mass ratio of C to X is 4:1
For, 4 units of carbon, units of X = 1
Or, for 1 unit of C, unit of X=14
Or, for 24 units of C, unit of X=14×24=6
Now, we know that 6 atoms of X weigh 6 units.
Hence, X refers to H (since weight of H = 1)
The compound = C2H6
