Question

How to know the basicity of a given acid

Open in App
Solution

For basicity, you need to know the number of replaceable hydrogen ions the acid has.

For e.g., Let's consider the acid H2SO4 (Sulfuric Acid). In this acid, there are 2 replaceable hydrogen ions. So, its basicity will be 2.

In weak acids, like CH3COOH (Acetic Acid), there is one replaceable hydrogen ion, not 4! The hydrogen atoms in the methyl group are not replaceable. So, its basicity will be 1.
