Question

How to round off a decimal number to the nearest tenth?

Open in App
Solution

First write down a number with a decimal point. Let’s take example of 7.86. Check the tenths place that is just right of the decimal point. So in the number 7.86, the 8 is in the tenths place.

Check the hundredths place. Here the hundredths place is 6. Now round the tenths place up if the hundredths place is 5 or more.

If the digit in the hundredths place is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round up by adding 1 to the tenths place digit.

So in the number 7.86 has a 6 in the hundredths place so round up by adding 1 to the tenths place to get 7.9.

If there is a zero in the tenths place like in 4.03; we have to keep the zero in answer so it will be rounded to the nearest tenth is 4.0.
