Question

How to solve a system of inequalities without graphing ?

Open in App
Solution

Solve a system of inequalities without graphing:

Elimination or Substitution of variables is not possible to solve the inequalities.

So, form a range for dependent variable using the independent variable.

Lets consider a following system of inequalities:

3x+2y≤5y+x≥1

[Make y as dependent variable to make its range with the equation of x]

Operate on the first equation:

3x+2y≤52y≤5-3x [Subtract 3x from both side of the equation]

y≤5-3x2 [Divide both side of the equation by 2]

Operate on the second equation:

y+x≥1

y≥1-x [Subtract x from both side of the equation]

Therefore, the range of y will be as follows:

y∈[1-x,5-3x2]

Hence, the range can be formed for the dependent variable using the independent variable.
