The Indian society was unjust towards women in th 19th century because the society followed patriarchal norms where women were not given their due status. They were deprived of economic and social freedoms. They were confined to reside within the four walls of the house. Moreover, social evils like widow burning or 'Sati', child marriage, female infanticide, polygamy, purdah system, dowry etc were highly practised which made life of women miserable.
