How was the rise of nationalism in India different from Europe?
The people in Europe rose against their own monarchial rulers. They wanted to establish the principle of democracy. Nationalism in India emerged as an opposition to the foreign (British) rule. The Indians wanted complete independence from the British.
The rise of nationalism in India was different from that of Europe because, in India, nationalism was largely free from violence. Thus, the feelings of nationalism that arose during the period of British rule in India were mostly non-violent and it was through a non-violent struggle that India attained freedom. In contrast, the rise of nationalism in Europe was accompanied by violent revolutions and wars.
