White blood cells are also known as the leucocytes. There are various types of leucocytes like neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes and monocyte. All of these are involved in providing immunity to the body by fighting against the infectious bodies that enter the body. Monocytes and neutrophils are phagocytes (i.e they digest the foreign cells); eosinophils resist infections; basophils are involved in inflammatory reaction. Lymphocytes are responsible for immune responses by releasing specific antibodies on encountering various pathogens. These antibodies attack at the pathogen; thereby, providing the protection from the pathogen.
