Solution

a. Sodium carbonate on treating with dil. HCl results in the formation of sodium chloride with the liberation of carbon dioxide gas. Na subscript 2 CO subscript 3 plus 2 HCl rightwards arrow 2 NaCl plus straight H subscript 2 straight O plus CO subscript 2

Sodium sulphite on treating with dil. HCl results in the formation of sodium chloride with the liberation of sulphur dioxide gas. Na subscript 2 CO subscript 3 plus 2 HCl rightwards arrow 2 NaCl plus straight H subscript 2 straight O plus SO subscript 2

b. Sodium thiosulphate reacts with dil. HCl to produce sulphur dioxide gas and precipitates yellow sulphur.
Na subscript 2 CO subscript 3 plus 2 HCl rightwards arrow 2 NaCl plus straight H subscript 2 straight O plus SO subscript 2 + S ↓
