Question

How will the resistance of a wire change when : Its length is doubled.

Open in App
Solution

Resistance of wire is proportional to length and inversely proportional to area.
Area×Length=Volume
Area=VL
Volume of wire is always constant.
As length is doubled,
Area×(2L)=V
Area=V2L Area is halved.
So, R1=ρL1A1
R2=ρ(2L)(A2)=4ρLA
Resistance of wire increases by four times.
