  1. Percentage composition determines the amount of elements present in the compound.
  2. It is calculated by the ratio of the mass of an element in one mole of the compound and the molecular mass of the compound.

For example, calculate the percentage composition of Carbon (C) in Carbon dioxide.

The molecular mass of Carbon dioxide CO2 = 44 u

The atomic mass of Carbon (C) = 12 u

Percentageofcarbon=Massofcarbonin1molofCarbondioxideMassofcarbondioxide×100=12u44u×100=27.27%
