Question

how will you confirm that the evolved gas formed in the reaction between sodium and water is hydrogen?

Open in App
Solution

Sodium metal reacts rapidly with water to form a colourless basic solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2).

Na + 2 H2O ----> 2NaOH + H2

Hydrogen gas can be confirmed by bringing burning matchstick near the test tube. It produces a pop sound which confirm the evolution of hydrogen gas.
