Question

How will you convert benzene into nitrobenzene?

Open in App
Solution

Benzene to nitrobenzene:

  • The Nitrobenzene is prepared from Benzene by the process of nitration.
  • That is a nitro group substitutes the hydrogen of the aromatic ring compound by reacting with nitric acid and sulphuric acid.
  • First in the reaction, nitric acid reacts with sulphuric acid to form nitronium ionNO2+.
  • The Nitronium ion(NO2+) attacks the benzene ring to form an arenium ion.
  • Then the arenium ion loses a proton to form nitrobenzene.
