Question

How will you convert ethane to ethanol. Give the equation.

Open in App
Solution

  • Ethane is a saturated alkane represented by the chemical formula CH3-CH3and ethanol contains an alcoholic group (OH), this represented by the chemical formula CH3-CH2OH .
  • To convert ethane to ethanol we first have to covert ethane to ethene i.e. alkene by the following manner:

Setp-1: Ethyl bromide from ethane

CH3-CH3(g)EthaneBr2/CH3-CH2Br(g)Ethylbromide+HBr(l)Hydrogenbromide

Step-2: Further Ethyl bromide reacts with alcoholic KOH to give ethene

CH3-CH2Br(g)EthylbromideAlc.KOHH2C=CH2(g)Ethene

  • Now ethene reacts with electrophile and it forms intermediate in the form of carbocation and then form ethanol, reaction can be shown as:

H2C=CH2(g)Ethene+H3O+(l)ElectrophilleCH3-CH2+CarbocationOH-CH3CH2OH(l)Ethanol
