Question

How will you identify monocots and dicots on the basis of stomata? Why is the number of stomata greater on the lower surface of a leaf?

Open in App
Solution

The dicot plants have kidney-bean shaped guard cells surrounding the stomata. The monocot plants have dumb-bell shaped guard cells surrounding the stomata. The number of stomata is greater on the lower surface of the leaves to prevent the loss of water in the form of transpiration through the stomata. The lower surface does not face the light directly and so the loss can be minimized.
