Question

How will you measure the area of irregular shape?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
There can be multiple approaches to find the area of an irregular shape-
(a) If the shape resembles a polygon with five or more sides of different lengths, or can be imagined as a combination of various polygons, then break the shape into simple polygons like, square, triangle, rectangle and using formula for the areas of those polygons find their areas and then sum them up to find the area of the particular shape.
(b) If you're unable to break it into familiar shapes then you may have to use estimation using unit squares, draw or put the given shape on a mesh of unit squares and count the number of full squares covered, also consider squares which are more than half covered into it, and neglect those which are covered less than half, now add them all and multiply them with 1 cm2 to get the area of the given shape.
Regards.
