Solution
(i) Benzene from phenol. Phenol is reduced to benzene by heating with zinc dust. C6H5−OH+Zn(dust)Δ−→C6H6+ZnO (ii) Ethylamine from Methyl alcohol Methyl alcohol is converted to methyl iodide by treatment with P/iodine. Methyl iodide is converted to acetonitrile by treatment with KCN. Acetonitrile is reduced to ethyl amine by treatment with Na/ethanol . CH3−OH(1)P/I2−−−−−→(2)KCNCH3−CN4[H]−−−−−−−→Na/ethanolCH3−CH2−NH2
(iii) Ethylene from ethyl alcohol.
Ethyl alcohol is dehydrated by heating in presence of alumina to obtain ethylene. CH3−CH2−OHAl2O3−−−→623KH2C=CH2+H2O
