How will you prove that a given salt is a carbonate of a metal.

It can be tested in the following way-
metal carbonate+acid=metal salt+carbon dioxide+water
Add an acid. The hydrogen ion will combine with carbonate to make H2CO3 which will decay into water and carbon dioxide causing rapid bubbling. Therefore, if you add an acid to a salt in solution and rapid bubbling occurs, then it is a carbonate salt.

we can conclude that,

You should add few drops of dilute acid such as HCL or H2SO4 to the salt.

Once the process is completed, colorless gas escapes in the form of product and displays brisk effervescence.

When you are passing the gas through lime water, it turns milky within a very short period of time.

The gas is C02 and the salt is regarded as the carbonate of the metal.
