Question

How will you prove that chlorophyll is required for photosynthesis to take place.

Solution

I would like prove this by an experiment.

Take a potted plant. Detach a leaf from it. Put the leaf in a test tube containing boiling alcohol. This is done so that chlorophyll in the leaf comes out to alcohol and leaf becomes pale. Remove the test tube. Take out the leaf and wash it with water.Spread the leaf on a watch glass. Put a few drops of iodine solution to this. Now the green part of the leaf becomes blue-black and the non green parts become brown. Reason is that starch is formed only in the green parts of the leaf by photosynthesis. This proves that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis .
