Question

How will you relate relative density and density?

Open in App
Solution

1. The relative density of the substance can be defined as the ratio of the density of the substance to the density of the water at 4°C.
Relative density = DensityofsubstanceDensityofwaterat4°C
2. Since the density of water at 4°C = 1000 kg m-3
3. We can calculate the actual density of a substance if we know the relative density.
Actual density = Relative density x density of the water at 4°C.

= Relative density x 1000 kg m-3.
Hence, relative density mainly compares the density of a substance with that of a standard substance and density refers to the closed packing of molecules.
