How will you separate a mixture of milk and cooking oil?

  1. The mixture of milk and cooking oil is immiscible.
  2. Immiscible liquids: Those liquids which do not mix together in all proportions and form separate layers are called immiscible liquids.
  3. When two immiscible liquids are mixed together, they form two distinct layers which can be separated by using an apparatus called a separating funnel.
  4. The liquid mixture to be separated is placed in a separating funnel that includes a stop-cock to allow or inhibit the flow of the lower layer of liquid from the funnel.

Principle:

  1. A separating funnel is used to separate the two immiscible liquids.
  2. Different liquid components have different densities, so the lighter liquid forms the upper layer and the denser liquid forms the lower layer in the separating funnel.
  3. In order to collect the heavier liquid from the separating funnel, the funnel stop-cock is opened slowly.
  4. After the lower layer completely runs down into a receiver placed beneath the funnel, the stopcock is closed.
  5. Afterwards, the lighter liquid, i.e., oil in the upper layer, is removed by opening the stopcock again and collected separately
