Question

How will you separate common salt and camphor present in a mixture? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

  • Different types of separation techniques are present depending upon the properties of substances to be separated
  • By analysing the mixture of common salt and camphor, camphor is a sublimable substance i.e., it can change directly into gaseous state from solid-state (sublimation) and common salt is a non-sublimable substance.
  • When mixture is heated in a china dish which is covered with an inverted funnel, camphor undergoes sublimation. We have to put a cotton cloth on the stem of the funnel to prevent the escape of camphor vapours. On the cooler side of inverted funnel the vapours then changed to solid-state.
  • Common salt will remain within the china dish

In this way we can separate mixture of common salt and camphor using sublimation.
