Husk or dirt particles are lighter than pulses. The process of separating substances based on the difference in weights of the constituent component is called winnowing. It is used when the impurities are much lighter than the desired substance, such that it can be carried away by the wind. Therefore, husk or dirt can be separated from pulses by winnowing.
