Question

How will you separate the following mixtures? Name the methods that can be used.

CaCO3 and NaCl

Open in App
Solution

Separation of CaCO3 from NaCl :

  • CaCO3 (Calcium carbonate) is insoluble in water while NaCl (Sodium chloride) is soluble in water. So, when we add water to this mixture, NaCl dissolves in water.
  • The solution is then subjected to filtration and CaCO3 being insoluble remains on the pores of filter paper and is separated from the NaCl solution.
  • The salt (NaCl) solution is then made to undergo evaporation and due to this, the water molecules vaporize, and NaCl is left behind.
  • Hence, CaCO3 can be separated by filtration, and NaCl solution can be separated by evaporation.
