Aim - To prove that air is necessary for burning.

Requirements - Two candles, a glass jar, and matchsticks.

Theory -

Combustion - The reaction of oxygen(air) with a substance(fuel) that results in the release of heat and light is called combustion.

Procedure -

  1. Take a candle and light it with a matchstick and place it on a table.
  2. Take another candle and light it, now cover the candle with a glass jar.

Observation -

  1. The candle that is kept on the table continues to burn.
  2. The candle that is covered with a glass jar burns for some time and then extinguishes.

Conclusion - This means that the candle with a continuous supply of air kept on burning, while the other candle with no supply of air extinguishes.

Result - Air is necessary for combustion/burning.
