Question

How will you use a solenoid to magnetize a steel bar?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Explanation about the solenoid

  • A solenoid is a coil consisting of a large number of circular turns of insulated copper wires.
  • The field lines inside the solenoid are parallel to each other.
  • So, the strength of the magnetic field produced is the same at all points inside the solenoid.

Step 2: How can we use a solenoid to magnetize a steel bar

  • Place a steel bar inside a solenoid.
  • A constant current is passed through it.
  • There will be constant magnetic field inside the solenoid when the constant current is flowing through the solenoid.
  • In this way, the strong magnetic field inside the solenoid will magnetize the steel bar.
