(1) Methane to ethane
Methane on chlorination gives chloromethane followed by Wurtz synthesis gives ethane.
$C H_{4} + C l_{2} ⟶ C H_{3} C l + H C l$
$2 C H_{3} C l + 2 N a ⟶ C_{2} H_{6} + 2 N a C l$

(2) Methyl bromide to ethyl bromide
Methyl bromide is converted to ethane by Wurtz reaction. Ethane on bromination gives ethyl bromide.
$2 C H_{3} B r + 2 N a e t h e r - -- \to C H_{3} - C H_{3} + 2 N a B r$
$C H_{3} - C H_{3} + B r_{2} ⟶ C H_{3} C H_{2} B r + H B r$

(3) Acetylene into nitro ethane
$H C \equiv C H H_{2} - \to C H_{2} = C H_{2} H B r - -- \to C H_{3} - C H_{2} - B r N a N O_{2} - --- \to C H_{3} - C H_{2} - N O_{2}$
