Question

How would you account for the following: Cr2+ is a stronger reducing agent than Fe2+

Open in App
Solution

It is because in Cr^3+ , d^3 (half filled t2g orbitals) is more stable in aqueous solution than Fe^3+ (d^5) i.e., Cr^3+ is more stable than Fe^3+. Therefore Cr^2+ is a stronger reducing agent than Fe^2+ .
