Question

How would you calculate the relative humidity of a place? Explain with an example.

Solution

Relative humidity is defined as the ratio of the amount of water vapour in the air to the amount the air can hold at the temperature. Or in other words, relative humidity is the ratio of the air's water vapour content to its water vapour capacity. This ratio is expressed in percentage. If the air at 15-degree temperature contains 5 grams of water vapour per kilogram, the relative humidity will be expressed as 5/10 or 50 percent. In case air is saturated the relative humidity is 100 percent. The relative humidity can be expressed by the following equation:
R.H. = vapour pressure/saturation vapour pressure × 100
