The production of carbon dioxide is a characteristic difference observed during the heating of baking powder and washing soda. Baking powder, on heating, produces sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide gas, and water.
2NaHCO3(s)Heat→Na2CO3(s)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)
Similarly, when washing soda (Na2CO3) is heated, it does not produce carbon dioxide. It loses its water of crystallisation and becomes anhydrous.
Na2CO3⋅10H2O(s)→Na2CO3(s)+10H2O(l)
