Question

How would you distinguish dilute HCI and diluteHNO3 by addition of only one solution?

Open in App
Solution

By adding a few drops of AgNO3 solution to dilute HCl and dil. HNO3.
Dil. HCl reacts with AgNO3 to give a white ppt. of AgCl.
HCl(aq.)+AgNO3(aq.)AgCl(s)+HNO3(aq.)
On the other hand, there is no reaction observed when dil. HNO3 is treated with AgNO3 solution.
HNO3(dil.)+AgNO3No reaction
Hence we can distinguish dil. HCI and dil. HNO3 by addition of AgNO3 solution.
