Question

How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid on the basis of a chemical property?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

Alcohol is a hydrocarbon that contains -OH as a functional group. An example of alcohol is C2H5OH

Carboxylic acid is a hydrocarbon that contains -COOH as functional group. An example of carboxylic acid is CH3COOH

Step 2: Chemical Test:

There is a test to distinguish between alcohol and carboxylic acid:

Treatment with sodium carbonate

When Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is added to carboxylic acid it gives effervescence.

2CH3COOH+Na2CO32CH3COONa+CO2+H2O(Carboxylic(Sodium(Sodiumacetate)acid)carbonate)

But when Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is added to alcohol then there is no reaction.

C2H5OH+Na2CO3Noreaction(Alcohol)(sodiumcarbonate)
