Question

How would you obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water?

Open in App
Solution

Following steps are required to obtain clear water from muddy water:
i) Allow muddy water to stand undisturbed in a container.
ii) After sometime, mud settles at the bottom of the container. This process is called sedimentation.
iii) The upper layer is of water containing finer sand impurities (which generally, do not settle down), while the mud sediment is at bottom. Pour the water gently into another container. This process is called decantation.
v) To remove finer impurities left out, we can filter the water with the help of a filter paper. This process is called filtration.

Therefore, clear water is obtained from muddy water following the separation techniques as shown below:
Sedimentation → Decantation → Filtration
