According to de Vries' mutation theory, living organisms can develop changes to their genes that greatly alter the organism. These changes are passed down to the next generation, and lead to the development of new species. Once a new species has evolved, it becomes fixed and stops changing.

In Darwin's theory he proposed that minor variation cause evolution which are small and directional, while Huge De Vries proposed that mutation cause evolution which are random and directionless. According to Darwin evolution is a gradual process while according to Huge De Vries evolution is cause by sudden mutation.
