The vertebral column in adults have four curvatures and are classified as- primary or secondary curvatures.
1) The primary curves are the ones which are retained from the fetal curvature
It is retained in two regions as the thoracic curve which consists of thoracic vertebrae and the sacrococcygeal curve.
2) Whereas, the secondary curvatures develop
gradually after the birth as the child learns to sit upright, stand and walk.
The lumbar curve of the lower back is a secondary curvature.
