Question

What is the test for carbon dioxide (CO2).

Open in App
Solution

Carbon dioxide (CO2), a colourless gas having a faint sharp odour and a sour taste.

  • It is the most important greenhouse gas linked to global warming.
  • Non- inflammable gas at normal temperature and pressure.
  • One molecule of CO2 is made up of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.
  • Plant use CO2 and release oxygen as a part of photosynthesis.
  • The most effective way to test for CO2 is to bubble the gas through “ lime water”, a diluted solution of calcium hydroxide. When we bubble carbon dioxide through the solution, it forms a solid precipitate of calcium carbonate- chalk or limestone.
