Hyaluronic acid is an anionic, nonsulfated glycosaminoglycan distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. It is found in the ground substance of synovial fluid of joints and vitreous humor of eyes. It is also present as a ground substance in connective tissues and forms a gel around the ovum. Connective tissue is found everywhere in the body. Its major functions include binding, support, protection, and insulation. In all connective tissue, there are three structural elements. They are ground substance (hyaluronic acid), stretchy fibers (collagen and elastin) and a fundamental cell type. Hyaluronic acid serves as a lubricant and shock absorbent in joints. The enzyme hyaluronidase present in semen degrades the gel (hyaluronic acid) around the ovum which allows effective penetration of sperm into the ovum.
